In 1994 Eric and Doreen Dumpleton heard about the U3A. They got in touch with the U3A Head Office to learn that a successful branch had already been established in Burnham-on-Sea and that they might be able to provide information about setting up a branch in Weston-super-Mare. Eric and Doreen enlisted the aid of Jan and Pam Berg, and the four of them set up a meeting to see if a branch could be started. The meeting was a great success, with about 150 people turning up. By the time it was over, U3A Weston was born. It has gone on from strength to strength and it is now one of Weston-super-Mare's best known organisations catering for retired people in the town. Over six hundred members enjoy the fellowship of some sixty different groups.
